The Story
Within Attractions is a film about looking beyond the surface to behold a truth that is free of judgment and opinion. There are many different paths one can take, in this journey called life. Each one is different, but we are all searching for something, and in that way we are connected.
While staying at a friends house in Toronto, Canada, Patrick Phillips (writer/producer) had the pleasure of being a fly on the wall. Amidst the flurry of people and activity, Patrick had a front row seat to the lives of three women. Over a period of three weeks, these women (ranging in age from 25-35) were under his close scrutiny as they spoke openly and explicitly about sex, work, men, women and each other. Although bewildering at times, these conversations inspired Patrick to write a film. The first draft was formulated in 1998.
However, after re-reading the script, Patrick realized that his portrayal of the women was not sufficient enough. Throughout his time in Toronto, he had befriended these women and was introduced to the more intimate sides of their personalities. While observing their candid interactions around the house, details about their private lives and feelings regarding them, began to manifest. In a safe environment, these women allowed their vulnerability to emerge. It was this untouched side, in particular, that fueled the fire and passion behind Patricks vision. He knew his script needed to illuminate perception, shedding light on his new knowledge: that there is so much more to women than what lies on the surface.
Using his newly formed wisdom and the expertise of two female editors (Laura Buckles/Myra Mero), Patrick began to make major alterations to the script. Leaving the concept still based loosely upon these women, a script was created which empowered women, while allowing their faults to show through. Within Attractions is a story that has been carefully molded to make us laugh, cry and be enlightened on the emotional journey of life - whatever path you may chose to walk upon.
